In the battle between the frontrunner and cellar dweller, rookie sensation Angge Poyos is looking to steer University of Santo Tomas to its sixth straight win in the UAAP Women’s Volleyball Championship when it collides with the still winless University of the Philippines on Wednesday, March 13, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Undefeated in five games, the Golden Tigresses tackle the Fighting Maroons (0-5) at 2 p.m. for the first offering of the women’s play.
In the other game, Adamson (2-3) and Ateneo (1-4) clash at 4 p.m. with the Lady Falcons seeking to bounce back from an embarrassing three-set loss at the hands of Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws last week.
Poyos, who produced a career-best 26 points in the team’s three-set win over Ateneo last week, is expected to continu her fine showing.
The rookie is in an early tight race against fellow freshman Casiey Dongallo of the University of the East Lady Warriors for the Rookie of the Year-Most Valuable Player awards after their equally stunning debuts.
Likewise, sophomore setter Cassie Carballo and reigning Best Libero Detdet Pepito have been consistently delivering the goods for the España-based squad to stay as the only unbeaten side in the tournament.
As they continued to struggle, the Fighting Maroons’ losing run has been stretched to 16 games dating from last season.
Under the guidance of new head coach and also program director Oliver Almadro, UP is still hoping for a breakthrough.
