Men’s volleyball gets a big boost as all nine teams participating in the Spikers’ Turf Open Conference blasting off tomorrow (Wednesday, March 13) have expressed enduring commitment to the league.
While favorites like Cignal and Criss Cross enjoy the backing of prominent companies, other squads are driven by individuals whose passion for the sport aims to elevate men’s volleyball in hopes of mirroring the achievements of their female counterparts.
Regardless of the teams’ sponsors, the unified sentiment is that they stand firmly behind the Spikers’ Turf, collectively contributing to the sport’s advancement, including its popularity.
Mike Navi, owner of D’Navigators team, shared his life-long dream of showcasing Iloilo’s talent in the Big City, expressing his commitment to the league’s continued success.
“For the D’Navigators-Iloilo, it’s my long-time dream to join Spikers’ Turf because I’m from Iloilo. Now that I have brought Iloilo here, as long as there is volleyball, I think I can commit the team to join,” said Navi.
Ralph Ocampo, the head coach and owner of VNS (Volleyball Never Stops) team, echoed his unwavering support for the Spikers’ Turf. The Griffins have played a crucial role in identifying talents, nurturing players who have transitioned to leading collegiate squads.
“As the team owner and head coach of VNS, we are committed to the Spikers’ Turf for a long-term program. We are developing many players para mas maraming maipakitang mga talents,” said Ocampo.
Ralph Calasin, a player from Air Force, cited the challenges of juggling military duties and sports but, like Navi and Ocampo, affirmed their commitment to the league. The Air Force squad, featuring new recruits like beach volley players James Buytrago and Pol Salvador, along with Herald Domingo and Louis Lumanlan, remains dedicated to their passion for volleyball.
“Nagpapasalamat kami sa mga commanders namin kasi as soldier-athletes, napakahirap po talaga sa amin pero ini-extend namin yung arms namin to be an athlete as well kasi yung passion laging nandoon, so hanggat may volleyball, nandito kami,” said Calasin, who is an enlisted personnel.
Other teams in the fold are Maverick, PGJC-Navy, and Savouge.
The opening match will pit Air Force against RichMarc Sports at 4 p.m. at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
