Martin Nievera’s renewed partnership with Vicor Music bore fruit.
The 62-year-old singer-songwriter is out with his latest single, a remake of Joey Albert’s “Tell Me.”
According to Martin, the song is the first in a series.
“I’m doing a set of these 80s tune that I love, putting a new spin to each,” said Martin. “It’s all going to be part of an album called ‘Take Two.'”
Why that title?
“Well, my first album with Vicor was titled ‘Take One.’ So, this is kind of like, the part two of that. It will have tons of OPM classic that we kind of re-imagined.”
“The best thing about this project is that it’s going to be released on vinyl, something that I did all those years ago with ‘Take One.'”
It’s not as if Martin is now just eager to coast along at this point, doing covers after covers, if only to stay relevant.
He said, “I want to do more. I want to create more music.”
“Honestly, whenever people say I am among OPM icons, I always go, ‘What is that?’ Because I feel I haven’t done enough to be considered one. Well, maybe as a performer. But I feel like I am not on the level of say, an Ogie Alcasid or a Gary V. who both actually wrote a lot of their own hits. Most of mine were written by others.”
“So, on that end, I feel like I need to do more. I think I could do more. That’s why I’m excited with this partnership with Vicor and Viva. They have tons of great talents here, songwriters, arrangers, and I want to work with all of them. I think I could learn a lot from them. The aim is to come out with new songs, future classics. ”
Viva’s Vic Del Rosario, who established Vicor Music all those years ago, agreed with Martin.
He said, “Martin’s return with Vicor coincides with our plans to revitalize the label. Vicor has a long and storied history. But that doesn’t mean that it will remain in the past. We are now looking to the future of OPM and we will create more hits. We’ve done it before, we can do it again.”
