The men behind Super Series Philippines bared their plans to stage more introductory and beginner friendly aquathlon, duathlon and triathlon races this year.
“We plan to do more destination events and offer more beginner friendly formats as well as pocket events,” said Oliver Salas in Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.
Super Series Philippines did two events last year — the Sundown Duathlon in May and Boracay Super Triathlon in October. For this year, two successful events have been staged — a Sundown Rundown last January and the My Daily Collagen Triathlon two weeks ago at Subic.
All these events are open to beginners and seasoned athletes as well, and primarily serve as jumpoff point for those interested in getting into the endurance sports like aquathlon, duathlon and triathlon.
“Triathlon seems intimidating and we are here to make it more achievable and inviting to everyone,” added Salas in the forum presented by San Miguel Corporation, Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, MILO, PLDT/Smart, and ArenaPlus, the 24/7 sports app in the country.
Paul Garcia also graced the forum and shared his experience getting into the sport after being diagnosed with diabetes. He took up cycling then running the past two years and has lost close to 30 kgs.
“I did my first triathlon two weeks ago. I am more confident now and I feel I’m ready to join the bigger triathlon races,” said Garcia.
Salas said they are trying to work closely with the different LGUs (local government units) and expressed their willingness to stage races, including fun relays and those for kids from seven to 10 years old, in their areas in order to promote tourism through sports.
He said foreign athletes have been joining their races as well as members of the national team. In their last event, 50 relay teams saw action, among the field of close to 600 athletes.
“Our vision is to inspire people to do things that inspire them, including being healthier and more active,” said Salas.
