College of St. Benilde survived a strong second-set challenge by San Sebastian College to eke out a 25-13, 23-25, 25-13, 25-14 win on Wednesday, April 17, and regain the solo lead in NCAA Season 99 women’s volleyball at the Filoil EcoOil Arena.
Wielyn Estoque paced her team with 11 points while Michelle Gamit and skipper Jessa Dorog produced 10 hits apiece in helping the Lady Blazers stretch their winning run to four games.
It also extended CSB’s magnificent streak to 33 that included a pair of 11-win title sweeps the last two seasons.
Meantime, the Perpetual Lady Altas recorded their 3rd win after downing the Mapua Lady Cardinals, 25-20, 26-24, 20-25, 25-20.
Mary Rhose Dapol led Perpetual with 20 points, 19 from attacks and an ace apart from posting 11 excellent digs, while Shaila Omipon contributed 16 points.
And while the Jerry Yee-mentored team lost concentration in the second set that allowed San Sebastian to deal the three-peat-seeking titlist its first set defeat of the season, it managed to recover in time to re-impose its will and preserve the victory.
Just like before, Yee continued to shuffle his wards, giving his young guns the much-needed exposure to boost their confidence.
Aside from Gamit, the other graduating seniors are Jade Gentapa, Cloanne Mondonedo and Gayle Pascual.
Mondonedo had another day at the office as she came through with 19 excellent sets while contributing six hits she laced with four laser-like service aces.
Kat Santos paced the Lady Stags with 17 but was just no match to CSB’s firepower as the former fell winless in four outings.
