Janry Ubas boosted his bid of qualifying to the Paris Olympics after capturing the gold medal in the men’s long jump of the 84th Singapore Championships at the Singapore Sports Hub on Friday, April 19.
The 30-year-old Ubas leaped to a distance of 7.58 meters in the final round to give the Philippines its gold, a follow up to Leonard Grospe’s bronze medal finish in men’s high jump.
Ubas, a SEAG gold medalist, beat Chinese Taipei’s Wen Hua-Yu (7.43m) and Singapore’s Ivan Mun (7.26m), who settled for silver and bronze medal, respectively.
The Misamis Oriental pride will continue his journey abroad to earn more points so he will qualify for the Paris Games.
His next target is Hong Kong next month.
“Well done. Next stop [is the] Hong Kong National Championship,” he wrote on his Facebook post.
To secure a Paris berth, Ubas needs to reach or surpass the Olympic standard of 8.27m or place himself inside the top 32 entry.
Ubas is currently at 40th spot with 1162 points.
He is also set to vie the ICTSI Philippine Athletics Championships at the PhilSports Track and Field Oval in Pasig City next month, which is a World Athletics-sanctioned event.
