Bryan Bagunas propelled Cignal to a victorious start in the 2024 Spikers’ Turf Open Conference Finals, defeating Criss Cross in four intense sets, 27-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-19, Wednesday evening at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
Bagunas, a former league MVP, showcased his prowess with an impressive tally of 26 points built on 23 attacks, two blocks, and one ace, accompanied by 12 excellent receptions.
His standout performance, coupled with a collective team effort, enabled the HD Spikers to avenge their semifinal setback against the King Crunchers.
Expressing his gratitude, Cignal head coach Dexter Clamor commended Bagunas for his pivotal contributions and emphasized the significance of the entire team’s dedication.
“Sobrang grateful ako na I have Bryan Bagunas who can perform well in crucial situations. Sobrang nagpapasalamat ako hindi lang kay Bryan kasi it’s a total team effort ng bawat isa sa team,” said Dexter Clamor.
While the initial sets hinted at a closely contested match, the HD Spikers asserted dominance in the latter half, clinching victory and edging closer to clinching their second consecutive Open Conference championship.
Cignal aims to clinch the title while Criss Cross seeks redemption to keep their championship aspirations alive on Friday, 6:00 p.m. at the same venue.
Seizing a commanding 19-12 lead in the fourth set, Cignal thwarted any attempts at a comeback from Criss Cross, ultimately securing Game 1.
Aside from Bagunas, Jau Umandal delivered 15 points, supported by JP Bugaoan and Wendel Miguel with 11 points apiece.
Cian Silang continued to fill in for EJ Casana, tossing 17 excellent sets while Vince Lorenzo registered 16 excellent receptions to lead the defense.
On the opposing end, Marck Espejo led Criss Cross with 22 points, followed by Jude Garcia with 21 points.
Despite their efforts, the King Crunchers fell short, with no other player breaching double digits in scoring.
