The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) unveiled on Wednesday, June 19, the customized barong attire that will be worn by members of the national delegation during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics slated next month.
Designed by Francis Libiran, the “exquisite” barongs were crafted from piña-jusi fabric and features a detachable silk organdy sling with embroidered sun rays and Pintados-inspired warrior patterns.
According to POC, every element of the design symbolizes bravery and national pride as well as the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines.
Boxers Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam, who won silver medals in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, banner the delegation as the country’s flag-bearers in the opening ceremony.
So far, the country has 15 qualifiers but more athletes are expected to be included in the coming weeks particularly in athletics, swimming and golf.
Aside from Petecio and Paalam, Filipino qualifiers to Paris are fello boxers Eumir Marcial, Aira Villegas and Hergie Bacyadan, gymnasts Carlos Yulo, Aleah Finnegan, Levi Jung-Ruivivar and Emma Malabuyo, weightlifters John Febuar Ceniza, Vanessa Sarno and Elreen Ando, rower Joanie Delgaco, pole vaulter EJ Obiena and fencer Samantha Catantan.
