“Citizen of a Kind,” a Korean film distributed here by Viva International Pictures, is quite the ride.
To be honest, we weren’t expecting much at the onset.
There are no big stars, no familiar faces.
Well, none that we actually recognize.
But no matter.
In the end, it convinced us that the Koreans really has an in on what makes viewers tick, injecting the film with the right amounts of comedy, drama and suspense in all the correct places, ultimately coming up with something engaging.
The story follows Deok-Hee (Ra Mi-ran), a middle-aged Korean woman having a hard time taking care of herself and her two kids due to a series of misfortunes.
In her naiveté, she would go on to add to it, falling victim to a scam as perpetrated by Son Jae-Min (Gong Myung).
Identifying himself as a bank manager, Son Jae-Min slowly gains Deok-Hee’s trust, eventually offering her higher loan credit but for some fees.
Desperate, Deok-Hee eagerly gives in.
It was already too late when she discovers it was a scam.
Unlike other victims, Deok-Hee is not one to go away so easily though. She wants to get back at Son Jae-Min and will stop at nothing to achieve the same.
She was surprised when Son Jae-Min phones her out of the blue asking her to expose the gang he is involved in, which is based in China.
But why?
Is Son Jae-Min actually telling the truth this time?
Will Deok-Hee succeed in exposing the scammers?
Directed by Park Young-ju, “Citizen of a Kind” is now showing exclusively in SM Cinemas (https://viva.com.ph)
