As expected, rivals University of Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) put on electrifying shows to kick off their respective seasons before massive crowds on a cheerful Saturday afternoon, Sept. 7, at various venues.
Arguably the most popular and valuable of the two premier collegiate leagues in the country, the UAAP launched its 87th season at the Smart Araneta Coliseum with a concert to remember – big thanks to host University of the Philippines.
No less than the iconic OPM band Eraserheads – reunited once again for the hosting of its alma mater – sent young and old fans into frenzied celebration – some into nostalgic mood – when they performed seven of their blockbuster hits.
Led by vocalist Ely Buendia, Eraserheads had the crowd singing when they sang the old-time favorites ‘Ang Huling El Bimbo’ and ‘Magasin.’
The crowd went even wild when Buendia, along guitarist Marcus Adoro, bassist Buddy Zabala, and drummer Raymund Marasigan, told them that it was their first time to perform at the Big Dome.
Other artists who graced the occasion – perhaps the biggest opening show in years – were Lean Ansing, Franco bassist Dave Delfin, and Moonstar 88’s drummer Bon Sundiang and vocalist Maysh Baay.
League chairman and UP president Atty. Jijil Jimenez expressed excitement and pride for the event, saying: “The University of the Philippines opens the Season 87 as hosts by sending a message to the world that together, we can be stronger and better as schools, as a community, as a nation, and as citizens of the world.”
“From its beginnings almost a century ago, the UAAP has become what it is today – the most popular college sporting franchise this country has ever seen and it’s most valuable as well.”
“Let this season be a testament to the unity, the excellence, and the sportsmanship that define the UAAP. This season, we make our athletes stronger, better, together,” added Season President and UP Chancellor Carlo Vistan II.
Season 86 Athlete of the Year and swimmer Quendy Fernandez of UP led the Oath of Sportsmanship.
The Battle of Katipunan will take the spotlight as the Ateneo Blue Eagles and last year’s runner up the UP Fighting Maroons battle it out in their 6:30 p.m. showpiece.
Over at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, NCAA marked its centennial season by honoring its notable players from 10 participating schools, including cagers CJ Perez (Lyceum), Baser Amer (San Beda), RJ Jazul (Letran), Adrian Nocum (Mapua), Allyn Bunaladi (San Sebastian), and Sidney Onwubere (EAC); trackster Mark Harry Diones (JRU); spikers Louie Ramirez (Perpetual) and Regine Arocha (Arellano); and table tennis ace Ryan Jacolo (CSB).
The 10 notable athletes graced the opening of the grand old league where they received plaques of recognition.
All participating student-athletes joined in the parade of athletes before a double-header clash set to start between defending champion San Beda and Lyceum at 2:30 p.m. The College of St.Benilde-Mapua duel caps a hectic day when they clash at 5 p.m.
