College of St. Benilde put the clamps on San Beda and came away with a 70-65 overtime victory on Tuesday, Sept. 10, to seize the solo lead in NCAA Season 100 men’s basketball at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.
The Blazers held the Red Lions to a single field goal and three charities while also attacking the basket courtesy of Jhomel Ancheta to clinch their second win in as many outings.
Ancheta paced St. Benilde with 14 points, none too important than the booming trey and the jumper he made at the start of the extra period that gave them a 65-60 lead and set the tone throughout.
San Beda had a chance — albeit slim — in the last 1.49 ticks, but a defensive stop from Justin Sanchez on Bryan Sajonia dashed its hopes.
Winston Ynot also delivered for the Blazers with 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Allen Liwag finished with a double-double of 12 points and 14 boards.
The Blazers almost closed the game early after a triple from Ancheta gave them a 60-58 lead in the last 19.7 seconds of the regulation, but the Red Lions retaliated with a jumper courtesy of Yukien Andrada.
Liwag attempted a winning putback off a missed triple from Ynot in the dying seconds of the regulation, but it bounced off the rim.
Sajonia finished with 19 points, Andrada added 13 and James Payosing contributed 10 in a losing effort for San Beda, which slipped to a 1-1 win-loss record.
