Kevin Quiambao delivered yet another MVP performance and led De La Salle University to an 82-52 win over Adamson in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Wednesday, Sept. 11
Quiambao unloaded 21 points spiked by four triples while David Dungo went perfect with a 5-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc to power the Green Archers’ second half attack en route to a lopsided second win.
The Taft-based quad sank 15 three-pointers which is the most so far by any team this season while Adamson sustained its first taste of defeat for a 1-1 card.
Henry Agunanne also took the spotlight for La Salle by notching 11 points and 16 rebounds while Dungo ended up with 15.
As expected, La Salle flexed its championship experience in the opening quarter where they overwhelmed Adamson with its suffocating defense and balanced offense to seize an early 20-6 lead.
In the second frame, the Soaring Falcons slowly recovered by cutting the lead to just 10, 15-25, before Quiambao and Gollena sank timely hits to preserve the cushion.
JC Macalalag and EJ Gollena also showed up for the Green Archers as they spearheaded a 9-2 blitz when the Soaring Falcons were threatening to come back.
Cedrick Manzano had 15 points and eight rebounds but he was the lone double-digit scorer for Adamson.
In the second game, University of Santo Tomas likewise notched its second win, downing Ateneo, 74-64.
The win was the first for Tigers against the Blue Eagles or since 2015 (Season 78) and 17 duels between the teams in the country’s premier collegiate league.
Tied at 60-all in the fourth quarter, the Espana-based crew shifted to another gear in the final stretch courtesy of Nic Cabanero, Forthsky Padrigao and Mo Tounkara, conspiring in a 12-0 run to finally pull away for good.
