Kevin Quiambao and Mike Phillips showed the way as reigning champion De La Salle trounced Far Eastern University, 68-62, in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Wednesday, Sept. 25.
Quiambao and Phillips delivered the goods just when the Tamaraws launched a massive attack in the second half to successfully recover from a stinging loss to the UE Red Warriors in their previous game.
Phillips had a double-double effort of 13 points and 14 rebounds while Quiambao scattered 12 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists and three steals for the Green Archers.
La Salle improved to 4-1 at second place behind the league-leading UP Fighting Maroons (4-0).
La Salle took the momentum early on and built a lead that went to a high 45-32 in the second quarter before FEU crawled back in the third behind the efforts of Mohamed Konateh and Janrey Pasaol.
Despite trimming the deficit to just one, 51-50, the Tamaraws ran out of gas down the stretch as Quiambao and Phillips worked hand in hand to pull themselves away for good.
Mohamed Konateh had 12 points and 25 rebounds while Pasaol finished with 13 points as FEU slid to 0-5.
