Veterans Jemyca Aribado and Reymark Begornia produced mixed results in the 2024 Philippine Satellite 1 Thursday, Oct. 24, at the National Squash Centre.
The 31-year-old Aribado already made the country proud with a 11-5, 11-9, 11-6 win over South Korean Boram Ryoo in the semis to arrange a final showdown against No. 1 seed Japanese Erisa Sano this Friday afternoon, Oct. 25.
Ryoo, on her part, beat Filipina Lyra Kate Trasmil (11-4, 11-5, 11-2) and Singaporean Cassandra Ong (11-9, 11-9, 11-4) in the quarters and semis, respectively, to storm into the finals.
Aribado, a SEAG multi-medalist, was as ruthless as the whistling winds brought by storm “Kristine” outside of the venue.
She dismantled compatriot Yvonne Alyssa Dalida (11-7, 11-6, 11-8) in the quarters.
Begornia was not fortunate, losing to Malaysian PNG Nickhileswar Moganasundharam in their semis, 13-11, 11-8, 1-11, 11-9.
Prior to his exit, Begornia, 32, earned an early bye in the opening round then outlasted fellow PH Jonathan Reyes, 11-7, 11-6, 11-8, in straight sets in the quarters.
He settled for the bronze.
The win booked the Malaysian a finals meeting with South Korea’s Oh Seojin.
Meantime, the Challenger Classic is slated on Monday, Oct. 28, also at the same venue.
