Orient Pearl, the pop rock act that made it big in the 90s with such hits as “Pagsubok,” “Babaeng Sorbetes,” “Cry In The Rain,” and “Kasalanan,” among others, is making a comeback.
This time, they are in it for the long haul.
Leo Awatin, band guitarist, told us, “We are making a comeback mainly for the fans. We owe it to them. They have been asking us to release new songs for the longest time so, here we are and we’re back for good.”
They have a mission: To uplift, motivate listeners.
Said Leo, “Since ‘Pagsubok,’ a lot of fans have told us that our music helped them survive tough times. So, with this comeback, that is our goal, to continue and further cement that legacy.”
“People first heard us in the 90s, now most of them are fathers, mothers. Now, we want to reach out to their children, to the new generation and inspire them as well,” he added.
Joining him in the band’s latest incarnation are Budz Beraquit (keyboardist), Ryan Gomez (bassist), Third Caez (drummer), and Ney Dimaculungan (lead vocalist).
Yes, you read that right. The very same Ney who fronted 6cyclemind years back.
Said Budz, “He’s a perfect fit. We gelled instantly. With Ney, we found new hope. We are reinvigorated.”
Ney is excited as well.
“Orient Pearl has been a part of my musical journey,” he said. “Bata pa ako, nandiyan na sila. I am honored to be part of a band that I love and adore.”
What of people who will compare him with Orient Pearl’s original singer Naldy Padilla?
“I really don’t know, I mean, for sure there are some who will question my abilities if actually compare me with him. I just hope that they would give me, give us, a chance. We are here to forge a new beginning.”
Already out on various digital music platforms is their new single “Hari.”
