The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas has formally named Alfrancis Chua as the Gilas Pilipinas program director and team manager.
The federation made the announcement on the eve of the Nationals’ Thursday game against New Zealand where Chua, the concurrent San Miguel Corporation sports director, is expected to join head coach Tim Cone, deputies Richard Del Rosario, Jong Uichico and Josh Reyes at the bench.
SBP president Al Panlilio welcomed the addition of Chua, who the federation intentionally sought following Gilas’ golden run in the 2023 Asian Games where the sports executive served as the team manager.
“I am very happy that Alfrancis is back with Gilas. I work well with him and our only objective is to elevate Philippine basketball,” said Panlilio in a statement
“The SBP also extends our appreciation to San Miguel Corporation (SMC) Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Ramon Ang for supporting this decision to have Alfrancis help the program again,” he added.
Chua assumes this task in addition to his roles as SMC Sports Director, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Governor, and PBA Vice Chairman.
Having Chua on the bench couldn’t be more reassuring for Gilas according to Cone.
“It was great having him on the bench motivating the players. He is such a great motivator. That’s one of the things that we hope to enhance the program with his presence,” said Cone.
Chua is set to oversee the program which has put premium on the continuity with LA Tenorio, a long-time player and was once a deputy to Cone in the Asian Games also serving as the Gilas Youth mentor.
“I’m happy I’ll be able to help Gilas in this capacity,” said Chua. “I thank boss RSA for giving me his blessing in taking this new role and I look forward to working with coach Tim and LA (Tenorio).”
