Tension ran high as groups of rallyists broke the line of policemen on Recto Avenue to reach Mendiola in Manila during the commemoration of the 161st Bonifacio Day.
According to the Manila Police District (MPD), thousands of protesters from various progressive and militant groups joined forces to hold their Bonifacio Day activities at Mendiola.
The rally, aimed at highlighting various political issues, led to a confrontation when protesters broke the barricades and pushed past the line of police stationed to prevent them from moving toward the Mendiola area.
Scores were reportedly injured in the incident, including five policemen.
Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) claimed the police continue to obstruct the peaceful movement of the people through violence to suppress their democratic right to protest.
“Ngunit hindi tayo nagpapatinag kahit ilang beses tayong hinarang – itutuloy natin ang ating programa at patuloy na ipaglalaban ang karapatan at kagalingan ng sambayanan, sa kabila ng anumang panggigipit at karahasan,” KMU said.
Meanwhile, the MPD said they recognize the right to free speech and the activities prepared by the protesters, but they still need to obtain a permit to hold their protest in a non-freedom space like Mendiola.
Police authorities said they may consider filing charges against several protesters.
Bonifacio Day in Manila is typically marked by rallies, cultural events, and political speeches.
