“Espantaho” is among highly-anticipated entry to this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival and for good reason.
For one, it involves Chito Roño, among the country’s more respected filmmakers.
Then there’s the star-studded cast, which includes multi-awarded actors Judy Ann Santos, Lorna Tolentino, Chanda Romero, Eugene Domingo, among others.
Many in fact already consider it the film to beat come the festival’s awards night.
This could be a double-edged sword as some could expect too much of the film.
We did, actually.
To be clear, “Espantaho” didn’t disappoint. But it didn’t exactly offer anything new as well.
For sure, there are tons of surprises, scares in “Espantaho,” and they are enough to satisfy horror fans.
The best thing about the film though is that it actually tries to go beyond the limits given to the genre inasmuch as it dissects a complicated family affair, exploring lust, love, and betrayal along the way.
No doubt, “Espantaho” is multifaceted. But it is never confusing or long-winded. Yes, it is replete with intricate twists and unexpected turns, but not exhausting.
Indeed, it could have been all too much but as good as Chito is, we enjoyed every minute of the exhilarating ride.
Produced by Quantum Films, “Espantaho” opens in cinemas December 25.
