Mark Magsayo, if stars align for him, might get a shot at a world title earlier than expected.
That after, Viva Promotions, a sport promotion agency by Sean Gibbons’ son Brendan, announced that the Filipino former world champion is being considered as potential replacement for the opponent of undefeated American superstar Gervonta Davis.
The reigning World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight champion is set to face Lamont Roach on March 1 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
“Former WBC Champion Mark Magnifico Magsayo of MP Promotions has been revealed as a potential replacement opponent of Gervonta Davis,” said the promotion on Wednesday, Jan. 8.
Rumors of the possible cancellation of the Davis-Roach fight surfaced late in December although the fight is still expected to push through.
Should Magsayo gets the shot at what could be the biggest fight of his career, he would be facing a tall order against Davis who boasts a perfect 30-0 record with 28 knockout
For Magsayo though, he is currently ranked No. 2 in the junior lightweight division and is primed for a world title eliminator clash against Mexico’s Eduardo Hernandez. The winner of the bout will earn the chance to challenge reigning champion O’Shaquie Foster.
