Former First Lady Imelda Marcos, TV broadcaster Jessica Soho, National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts Ricky Lee and internationally-known designer Kenneth Cobonpue were among those honored by the Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII) led by its president, Dr. Cecilio K. Pedro, during its annual Chinese New Year Dinner Reception.
Marcos was recognized for her pivotal role in establishing Philippines-China diplomatic relations in 1975.
She was represented by her daughter, Senator Imee Marcos, who delivered an inspirational speech citing the Chinese ancestral heritage of the family.
Lee was recognized for his many achievements as scriptwriter, playwright, novelist, journalist, educator.
Soho, who actually traces her roots to her late grandfather’s ancestral village in Guangdong province, China, was lauded for her integrity and excellence as journalist.
Cobonpue was recognized for elevating Philippine industrial design globally.
Said Pedro, “What we need at this time is to further strengthen the ties that bind the Filipino and the Chinese. We at FFCCCII are doing everything we can to help elevate our nation. We should keep on doing that. We should work hand in hand to do this. Chinese heritage is part of the rich and diverse Filipino national culture. We should foster unity in the Year of the Snake.”
Note the event also coincided with the kick-off of celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Philippines-China diplomatic relations set on June 5.
