Chino Tancontian-Sy asserted his dominance and snared the gold medal in the 51st All Japan Sambo Championships and Japan 2025 International Competition at the Sumida Gymnasium in Tokyo over the weekend.
Tancontian, 24, displayed poise and beat all three of his rivals to reign in the +98 kg men’s division.
He collected the scalps of hometown bets Dan Hiramo Tokai, and Taichin Sasaki in his first and second bouts, respectively.
He took the gold after outlasting Taishin Ide Shokokuji.
Along with her elder sister Sydney, Chino was a multiple top podium finisher in various international meets, including Southeast Asian Games.
Last year, the Davao City native collected three golds after winning in competitions in Japan, France and the Netherlands.
Coming from a sport-active background, Chino’s dad Paolo is the current president of Pilipinas SAMBO Federation Inc. (PSFI).
He bannered University of Santo Tomas to multiple championships in the UAAP.
