Ange Poyos and Regina Jurado formed a deadly 1-2 punch and University of Santo Tomas wore down University of the East, 28-26, 22-25, 25-23, 25-15, for its first win in the UAAP women’s volleyball at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City Saturday afternoon, Feb. 22.
Apart Poyos and Jurado, the Golden Tigresses also drew inspired games from Margaret Altea and Bianca Plaza in the fourth set to prevail and hand the Lady Red Warriors their second straight defeat.
Poyos, who bagged last season’s Rookie of the Year award in runaway fashion, came through with another stellar show and finished with 21 points off 14 kills, four blocks and three aces.
Jurado was more lethal, firing 22 points off 18 attacks, two blocks, and two aces.
“Tinyaga talaga namin nu’ng training, kaya thankful maganda ‘yong naging resulta (ngayon),” added Poyos.
The win is likely to give UST an extra boost in time for its duel with La Salle on Wednesday.
It likewise negated Cepada’s 20-point effort for UE which is clearly struggling after star spiker Casiey Dongallo and two others transferred to UP.
It was a double celebration for UST as the Tigers demolished the Red Warriors, 25-17, 25-18, 25-19.
The Tigers played minus star player Josh Ybañez but his absence hardly mattered at all.
