If you’re into horror films that go beyond the usual scares, then “Caretakers” is right up your alley.
Produced by Rein Entertainment in tandem with Regal Films, “Caretakers” is actually an introspective take on love and motherhood, disguised as a supernatural folk horror outing.
In it, Iza Calzado is Audrey, a mother of two eager to break away from an abusive relationship.
To do so, she sets out to claim what she believes is rightfully hers – a property owned by her partner’s family.
She wants to sell it so she could start anew with her children.
Acting as caretaker of the property is Dimples Romana’s Lydia, herself a mother of three.
Lydia is not keen on letting go of the property, insisting the entities who live there doesn’t approve of the same.
Therein lies the conflict.
How will Audrey convince Lydia to see things her way?
And how about the so-called unseen entities that call the property home? How will she appease them?
Film producer Lino Cayetano praised director Shugo Pracio’s efforts to put across the narrative in a very interesting manner.
“His approach is very poetic, very theatrical, hindi niya minamadali ang mga eksena,” he told us. “Hindi niya pinepwersa yung scares, they’re all very subtle but effective.”
He also crowed about the film being able to convey long-forgotten ideas relating our culture.
“Yung society natin ngayon is driven by commerce, pera. A lot of us have forgotten yung mga old beliefs, dismissing them as simple folk tales thus reducing its meaning. I think this is what makes the film quite timely.”
“The Caretakers,” rated R-13 by the MTRCB, is now in cinemas.
