The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) deployed police teams to ensure peace and order in various converging points and protest sites of supporters of former President Rodrigo Duterte in Metro Manila.
NCRPO director Brig. Gen. Anthony A. Aberin said the move aimed to prevent any eventuality that may happen at the course of the rally.
“With rallyists expected to gather, our responsibility is to maintain public order while honoring their right to express themselves,” said Aberin.
Aberin personally inspected the police teams that were tasked to secure the rally sites. Among the areas he inspected were Lawton and Mendiola areas in Manila.
He said the inspections were aimed at ensuring that those deployed are with proper resources and readiness in case of any eventuality and are visible even at the converging sites.
“These inspections solidify our commitment to proactive policing—ensuring visibility, preparedness, and readiness to safeguard everyone’s safety,” said Aberin.
Supporters of the former president are expected to join the motorcade, protest march and several programs in Metro Manila to protest Duterte supporters.
The former president is now under the custody of the International Criminal Court (ICC) on charges of crimes against humanity over the bloody drug war during his presidency.
In Manila, hundreds of supporters were seen gathering at Liwasang Bonifacio, Ermita, Manila, on Saturday for a prayer rally, demanding Duterte’s return to the Philippines.
The crowd, estimated at 1,000 by 2:20 p.m. before the event officially began, continued to swell throughout the afternoon and was expected to grow into the thousands as the rally progressed.
Supporters, dressed in red and green, waved banners calling for justice, unity, and peace amid ongoing political and social challenges in the Philippines.
The rally, organized by the King of Jesus Christ (KOJC) ministry, featured a lyre band and dance performances, entertaining the attendees while maintaining the focus on the core message.
Former Duterte administration officials and several senatorial candidates under Duterte’s slate were present. Honeylet Avancena and Veronica “Kitty” Duterte were expected to make an appearance later in the day.
The Manila Police District (MPD), including 50 personnel from the Ermita Police Station (PS-5), maintained a visible security presence to ensure peace and order during the event.
Drones were also deployed to monitor the crowd and surrounding areas for safety.
Traffic in the area was observed, particularly from Quiapo to Taft Avenue, causing a congestion throughout the afternoon.
As of 3 p.m., the program officially began, with the crowd calling for Duterte’s return. (Reports from Aaron Recuenco and Diann Ivy Calucin)
