Just in time for Lent is GMA Pictures’ satirical comedy “Samahan ng mga Makasalanan.”
The film offers an insightful take on the struggle between good and evil as centered on Sto. Kristo, a town so sinful it could make Sodom and Gomorrah blush.
On a mission to reform its residents is Deacon Sam, as played by actor David Licauco.
Armed with fervent faith and the belief that everyone can be saved from sin, Deacon Sam forms the titular Samahan ng Makasalanan through which he aims to steer the townspeople toward the path of redemption.
Along the way, the young deacon finds himself facing temptation.
Joining David in this comedic crusade are Sanya Lopez, Joel Torre, David Shouder, Soliman Cruz, Betong Sumaya, Buboy Villar, Chariz Solomon, Liezel Lopez, Jade Tecson, Jun Sabayton, Chanty Videla, Jay Ortega, Christian Singsong, Shernan Gaite, Batmanunulat (Jerome Lois Esguerra), Tito Abdul (David Domanais), Tito Marsy (Christian Kimp-Atip), Yian Gabriel, Liana Mae, and child star Euwenn Mikaell.
David admitted he was apprehensive taking on the role of deacon at first.
“My initial reaction was, ‘Kaya ko ba ‘yun?’ Just because I never played a role na priest before,” he said. “Then again, it was exciting for me too kasi siyempre, I’m portraying a different character and like, kailan ka ba magiging pari sa buhay mo?”
So what did he learn doing the film?
He shared, “In life, it’s okay to commit mistakes, as long as you learn from your mistakes and eventually hindi mo na siya gagawin ulit.”
Present at the mediacon was former Ilocos Sur governor Chavit Singson, who co-produced the film with GMA.
He said, “Maganda ang pelikula dahil dito pinapakita na ang mga makasalanan pwede magbago. So, may pag-asa siyang hatid.”
Also present at the media conference was GMA Network Senior Vice President Atty. Annette Gozon-Valdes.
“Sobrang nakakatuwa pero heartwarming din. Maiiyak ka rin at times dahil makikita mo na kahit sa anong sitwasyon, laging may pag-asang magbago ang mga tao. And it’s a feel good movie talaga kaya lalabas ka ng sinehang naka-smile,” she said.
“Samahan ng mga Makasalanan,” directed by Benedict Mique, hits theatres April 19.
