PILI, Camarines Sur – Basketball takes centerstage as four teams, led by the visiting Kuala Lumpur Hornbills, begin their hunt for the coveted Gov. Luigi Villafuerte Cup basketball championship before an expected big crowd at the La Fuerte Sports Complex here Monday.
Opening-day action will pit NCAA member University of Perpetual Help System Dalta against NAASCU champion St. Clare College of Caloocan at 5:p.m. and Malaysia Hornbills against NBL Philippines team and host CamSur Express at 7:30 p.m.
Camarines Sur Gov. Luigi Villafuerte is expected to grace the opening ceremony at 5 p.m.
Gov Villafuerte, a leading advocate of sports in the province, will make the ceremonial toss, along with Armstrong Philippines Managing Director Ace Castillo, event director Norman Gomez and commissioner Jimmy Mariano.
Also invited is Camarines Sur Rep. L-RayVillafuerte.
This will be the first major international basketball tournament for the year in Pili, the capital of Camarines Sur and home of the world-famous Mt. Isarog National Park.
After Monday’s opening-day action, the games continue on Tuesday with Kuala Lumpur taking on Perpetual Help and St. Clare battling Cam Sur; and Kuala Lumpur playing St. Clare and Perpetual Help meeeting CamSur on Weenesday. T
he No.1 team and No. 4 after the single-round elimination will battle each other in the crossover semis. The No. 2 and No. 3 squads square off in the other semis. The championship game will be a winner-take-all encounter. .
