Singer-actress Pilar Garrido Corrales, more popularly known as Pilita Corrales, passed away Saturday, April 12.
She was 87.
Her passing was confirmed by her granddaughter, actress Janine Gutierrez, on social media.
Posting a classic black and white photo of Pilita, she wrote:
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved mami and mamita, Pilita Corrales.
“Pilita touched the lives of many, not only with her songs but also with her kindness and generosity. She will be remembered for her contributions to the entertainment industry, but most of all for her love of life and family.
“Please join us with your prayers and kind thoughts as we celebrate her beautiful life.”
Known as Asia’s Queen of Songs, the Cebuana mestiza started her showbiz career as TV presenter in Australia in 1957.
She went back to Manila in 1963 to host a radio program dubbed “La Taverna.”
She would go on to establish herself as singer performing around the country including the Manila Grand Opera House where she became a regular.
Through the years, Pilita would notch several iconic hits including “A Million Thanks To You, ““Dahil Sa Iyo,” “Hinahanap Kita,” “Kapantay ay Langit,” among many others.
This would ultimately lead to a long, illustrious acting career spanning both TV and film.
