ILOILO CITY —Juan “Johnny” P. Dayang, a veteran journalist and former Tempo columnist, was fatally shot by a lone gunman on Tuesday evening at his residence in Kalibo, the provincial capital of Aklan.
“He was declared dead on arrival,” said Police Capt. Aubrey Ayon, spokesperson of the Aklan Police Provincial Office, said.
Citing reports from the Kalibo police, Ayon said that Dayang, 89, was watching TV when a gunman entered his home in Barangay Andagao and shot him.
The gunman left onboard a motorcycle.
Motive in the killing is yet to be determined.
Dayang was a longtime president of the Publishers Association of the Philippines Inc. (PAPI).
He wrote for several publications, including Tempo (which published his “Echoes From” column) and Balita, both under the Manila Bulletin.
Dayang also served in other media organizations, as president of Manila Overseas Press Club (MOPC) and director and board secretary of the National Press Club (NPC).
