The Commission on Elections (Comelec) Second Division has disqualified Pasig congressional candidate, lawyer Christian “Ian” Sia, over his controversial remarks about single mothers during a campaign event in April, citing violations of election ethics and proper conduct.
In a resolution dated May 7, the poll body granted its motu proprio (on its own motion) petition based on Sia’s lewd remarks about single mothers, as well as his comments on his female assistant’s weight.
During one of his campaign sorties, Sia told his audience that single mothers who are still menstruating could sleep with him once a year when they feel sad.
The resolution emphasized that “Candidacy for public office is more than a political endeavor; it is a measure of one’s moral fitness to lead. Candidates are expected to carry themselves with honesty, decency, and a deep respect for others.”
“Public office demands a temperament that unites rather than divides, and a character that respects rather than demeans,” it added.
“Accordingly, Respondent is hereby DISQUALIFIED from continuing as a candidate for Member, House of Representatives, Lone Legislative District of Pasig City, in relation to the 2025 National and Local Elections,” the ruling stated.
The Comelec said Sia’s remarks were not only inappropriate but also unlawful and offensive to the principles that guide fair and respectful elections.
It added that his statements fall far below the standards required of those who wish to serve the people, noting that “public office demands better, and the people deserve no less.”
If Sia obtains the highest number of votes in the election, his proclamation shall be suspended until the case is finally resolved, the Comelec said. (Richielyn Canlas)
