Pepito extends UST stint, sets ‘Swan Song’ in Season 88

UST's Detdet Pepito (UAAP Media)

Popular libero Detdet Pepito has cleared the air of uncertainty as she decided to play her final eligible year for University of Santo Tomas in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament.

The development was confirmed by Fr. Rodel Cansancio, UST’s Institute of Physical Education and Athletics (IPEA) director to Manila Bulletin and Tempo Friday afternoon, May 9.

“Yes it is confirmed. Detdet is going to extend her stay with UST to play for UAAP season 88,” said Cansancio on Messenger.

Moments after their heartbreaking Season 87 exit loss to De La Salle University in the semifinal, the 22-year-old Pepito openly discussed her next move, noting that she needs time to finalize her decision.

“Let’s see,” was what Pepito, a graduating elementary education student, just echoed last weekend.

Pepito, Season 86 Best Libero awardee, was a pivotal part of UST core and with her stay, she is anticipated to lead anew the Golden Tigresses alongside Angge Poyos, Reg Jurado, Em Banagua, Bianca Plaza, and Cassie Carballo.

The former Palarong Pambansa standout finished second in digs department where she averaged 4.25 per set, while fourth in receivers with a total of 197 excellent receptions off 42.74 efficiency rate.

Jonna Perdido, who is still recovering from an ACL injury she sustained earlier the season, vowed as well to suit up for UST in her final season.

Aside from Perdido, Xyza Gula suffered a back injury prior to this edition. The two are key figures as well for the Kungfu Reyes-mentored squad and they are expected to return in action next year.

The Tigresses closed out their campaign with a 9-5 slate before yielding to the twice-to-beat holders Lady Spikers in the semis.
