FILIPINO rap icon-turned-actor Andrew E. is not retiring from the rap music scene. This he revealed despite appearing in the new prime time teleserye “Dolce Amore” on ABS-CBN.
“I’m not retiring from rap music, it’s just my style. Kaso binunyag mo na eh, but it’s my style,” Andrew E. laughed, during an interview in “Tonight with Boy Abunda” aired over ABS-CBN.
“I do albums once in awhile and pinag-aaralan ko ‘yung generation. So if I think there’s a loophole between this generation and the next, at pagmahina na ‘yung loophole, then that’s the time I come in,” said Andrew E., who plays Uge, the biological father of Serena (Liza Soberano) in the new series.
“For example ‘Humanap Ka ng Panget’ was 1991, ‘Banyo Queen’ was 1999. So imagine the gap after that song. Pag may generation na ang tendency is nauumay na sila sa mga naririnig nila, that’s when I come in,” he added.
Andrew E. (Andrew Ford Valentino Espiritu in real life) surged into the local rap music scene in 1990 after he was discovered by guitar
man RJ Jacinto in “That’s Entertainment” over GMA-7.
His smash debut song “Panget” was followed by other rap hits including “Huwag Kang Gamol,” “Alabang Girls,” “Andrew Ford Medina,” “Bini B. Rocha,” “That’s Why I Love You” (duet with Regine Velasquez), among others.
He also appeared in movies such as “Pitong Gamol,” “Andrew Ford Medina: Wag Kang Gamol,” “Megamol,” “Pretty Boy,” “S2pid Luv,” “Tusong Twosome,” etc.
For a while, Andrew E. went to Japan where he performed in clubs and even released a CD there.
Andrew E. also denied that his wife Mylene Espiritu got jealous of Sunshine Cruz, who is also part of the “Dolce” cast.
“Hindi s’ya nagselos.
In fact s’ya pa nga ang nag-push sa akin na gawin ’yung series. Sabi n’ya maganda ’yun at consistent ka na lahat
ng nape-pair sa ‘yo mga mestiza,” he said. His wife also acts as his manager.
Andrew E. also admitted he was building a mansion in Boracay. “It is physically done na.”
The singer also explained why he chose to be in the “Dolce” series than compose jingles or perform gigs for politicians in the May 2016 national elections.
“Unang-una, it’s a great timing. Ang da-ming offer sa akin pero this one is right timing.
’Yung love team paborito ng aking family.
Pero mataas ang batting average ko. ‘Yung mga na-endorse ko nananalo. ’Yun ang hataw,” Andrew E. added.
