Rashawn McCarthy and RR de Leon made key baskets in the overtime period to help AMA Online Education survive Mindanao, 91-85, yesterday in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup at The Arena in San Juan.
Back-to-back baskets by de Leon gave the Titans an 84-81 lead before McCarthy came through with a crucial three-pointer with 1:44 left in the extra session to extend AMA’s lead to 87-83.
Their heroics were enough to give AMA its second straight win following a 0-4 start while denying Mindanao from completing its comeback from a 20-point deficit.
McCarthy, who once played for the Westports Malaysia Dragons of the ASEAN Basketball League, finished with 20 points while de Leon added 14 markers.
Mindanao dropped to 1-5 despite 23 points and 11 rebounds from Kenneth Acibar and 19 points, six rebounds and four assists from Mark Sarangay.
Regulation play ended at 78-all after Mindanao’s Robby Celiz tied the score on three free throws and AMA’s Jerramy King missing a buzzing-beating jumper.
Meanwhile, Caida Tiles grabbed the share of the leadership, blasting UP QRS/ JAM Liner, 118-86.
The win puts the Tile Masters at 5-1, identical with CafeFrance, and now assures them a top four finish in the quarterfinals.
