True to his campaign promise, Rep. Mikee Romero (1Pacman Party-list) has manifested to file a bill that seeks to create a Department of Sports, the government entity that shall lead the implementation of policies on the promotion and development of sports and health fitness programs in the country.
The 17th Congress will officially begin on Monday but Romero and 81 other lawmakers have already shown their dynamism by making their proposed measures known for possible enactment into laws.
The House Bill No. 287, according to Romero, will address various issues and hurdle challenges that confront Philippine sports.
In the event that a sports department is created, the head will hold the position of secretary and will regularly attend Cabinet meetings, something that the Philippine Sports Commission chairman doesn’t enjoy.
Romero said the PSC has failed in living up to its mandate of providing leadership and setting the priorities and direction of all national amateur sports and development particularly giving the emphasis on grassroots participation.
He also stressed the need for the creation of Department of Sports since will greatly benefit not only the athletes and coaches themselves but also their own family.
