Powerhouse San Beda guns for a sweep of the first round of eliminations when it clashes with Jose Rizal University today in NCAA men’s basketball at The Arena in San Juan City.
Last year’s runnerup will leave no stone unturned in their 2 p.m. confrontation with the Bombers as they bid for their ninth straight victory.
Currently the No. 1 offensive team in the league, San Beda is expected to rely on its speed to outhustle JRU and strengthen its hold of the top spot.
A victory for the Red Lions would put them two games ahead of closest pursuers Arellano (7-2) and University of Perpetual Help (7-2) heading into the second round.
Fil-American spitfire Davon Potts will continue to anchor San Beda with his impressive numbers. He currently averages 18 points a game.
Offensive strength will also come from Javee Mocon, Dan Sara and Radge Tongco.
The all-around performance of Donald Tankoua, who posts 15 points and 11 rebounds per game, is also expected for the Red Lions.
Though lacking in big men, San Beda will turn to its defensive game after leading the rebounding department.
But JRU expects to give San Beda a hard fight, with the Bombers hoping to recover from an 89-69 defeat to Arellano last week.
Teytey Teodoro and Paolo Pontejos will fuel the Bombers’ attack, while AbdulRazak AbdulWahab and Abdoulad Poutuouchi will man the paint. (Kristel Satumbaga)
