CEBU CITY – The National Police Commission (Napolcom) has stripped Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña of police control after he withdrew his support for the campaign against illegal drugs.
In a resolution, Napolcom said the duties, obligations, powers and prerogatives given to Osmeña as Napolcom deputy are now removed.
“True to his pronouncement to withdraw his support, Mayor Tomas Osmeña had decided to stop giving allowances and rewards to new police officers who were newly assigned in the Police Office,” said the resolution. “He likewise ceased in supplying gasoline to police service vehicles and decided not to released the 15 patrol cars and three vans that were requested by the former Chief, Cebu City Police Station.”
Republic Act 8551 or the Philippine National Police Reform and Reorganization Act of 1998 deputizes mayors and governors automatically as NAPOLCOM representatives when they assume office.
Osmeña is still in the United States for a medical check-up. In his Facebook page, however, the mayor said he will abide by the decision of the Napolcom. (Mars W. Mosqueda, Jr.)
