Alaska team owner Wilfred Uytengsu has opposed the idea of having a separate Draft for players that will be named to the Gilas Cadet, a totally different process from the annual PBA Rookie Draft later in October.
Uytengsu initially suggested for the Cadet players to join the regular draft, and teams that would select them will have their rights even if they play for Gilas in the next three years.
However, the PBA Board of Governors is considering the possibility of holding a separate drafting for the players that will be named to the Gilas Cadet national team pool by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).
“I have been reading about how the PBA has accepted my proposal,” said Uytengsu. “For the Gilas Cadets joining the PBA draft and I would just like to clarify, that what they have said they will do is not my proposal at all.”
“I have proposed that the Gilas Cadets join the PBA draft, not that we create a separate draft for them,” added Uytengsu in a statement yesterday, pointing that a separate draft will create red flags like which team will select first.
Some of the players that are reportedly being considered for Gilas Cadet include Kiefer Ravena, Ray Parks Jr., Mac Belo, Russel Escoto, Mike Tolomia, Jio Jalalon and Roger Pogoy.
