Allyn Bulanadi sank the winning jumper with 3.8 ticks left as San Sebastian shocked powerhouse San Beda, 72-71, yesterday in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
Bulanadi took the game-winning basket off a pass after Red Lions’ starting point guard Dan Sara missed two charities with 9.6 seconds to go to keep the Stags’ flickering Final Four hopes alive.
It was San Sebastian’s second straight win since stunning University of Perpetual Help, 71-55, last Friday to hike its win-loss tally at 3-9.
San Beda, meanwhile, absorbed its second defeat against 10 victories but still remained on top of the standings.
It was also the Lions’ first loss since losing main man Donald Tankoua to a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.
Bulanadi, who is coming off a finger injury, scattered nine points in the fourth quarter to finish with 16 points, while hauling six boards in 23 minutes of action.
Trailing by 14, 52-66, midway the final period, San Sebastian unleashed a 16-2 blast courtesy of Bulanadi and Justine Mercado to close the gap at 68-all with 1:25 left.
Three points from Mocon and Davon Potts gave San Beda a 71-68 lead, but Bulanadi completed his two freethrows with 11.1 seconds to trim the Lions’ edge to 71-70.
Alvin Capobres also bannered San Sebastian with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Michale Calisaan posted a double-double of 11 markers and 10 boards.
Javee Mocon, meanwhile, topscored for San Beda in a futile effort with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Sara added 12 markers.
San Sebastian, actually, had a hot start by leading 37-27 at halftime before San Beda outscored them in the third, 31-10, to grab the 58-47 upperhand.
In the other game, reigning MVP Allwell Oraeme exploded with a monster game of 27 points and 25 rebounds as Mapua thumped Lyceum, 90-75, to improve to 7-4.
