Sofia Chabon stumbled with a two-over 75 and wound up eighth in the Thailand Ladies Amateur Open while Princess Superal wavered with a 73 and finished tied for fourth in the National Women’s GA-Zellwood Classic in Florida Thursday.
Chabon and Superal both struggled with their iron game and putting stroke and missed gaining a shot at the crown after staying in the hunt in the first two days of the two tournaments.
The 15-year-old Chabon, four down behind Nur Durriyah Damian after two rounds, had a two-under card after 13 holes at the Legacy Golf Club. But the Country Club ace double bogeyed the par-4 14th and the closing par-5 18th ended up with a 75 for a 217 total, 10 strokes behind the veteran Malaysian campaigner, who closed out with a 69 for a 207 to run away with the crown which Filipina Pauline del Rosario won last year.
Thais Tunrada Piddon (73), Rina Tatematsu (72), Napabhach Boon-In (75), Atthaya Thithikul (73) and Keerattirya Foocharoen (71) all finished with 215s for joint second.
Mika Fortuna shot a 7 to finish joint 10th at 219 while del Rosario also carded a 74 to share 12th place with TCC teammate Bernice Olivarez-Ilas, who hobbled with a 76 for 221s.
Over in Florida, Superal failed to sustain a solid 68 in the second with a two-bogey, one birdie effort, her miscues on Nos. 2 and 12, both par-3s, a result of poor tee shots. She actually recovered by birdying the 17th, also a par-3, from seven feet but ran out of holes to mount a comeback at the Zellwood Station Country Club.
She ended up with a 214 and received $1,038 with local ace Maria McBride scoring a wire-to-wire triumph with a 70 and a 207, four shots ahead of Laura Restrepo, who rallied with a 67 for a 211.
Amateur Regad De Guzman actually bested Superal with a 69 finish to snatch third place honors at 213.
The event served as Superal’s final tuneup for next week’s LPGA Q-School Stage II in Venice, Florida, where she will be joined by Symmetra Tour campaigners Dottie Ardina, Mia Piccio and Clariss Guce in the close to 300 field vying for 88 slots in Stage III.
