Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) General Manager Thomas ‘Tim’ Orbos believes a change in attitude among motorists can help solve the illegal parking issues in the metropolis.
Orbos said the sad reality is that most Filipino motorist prefer to prioritize their own convenience even if their actions actually serve as an inconvenience to other motorists.
Orbos is hopeful Filipino drivers will adopt what is turning out to be a common practice among drivers from other countries who do not mind walking from afar so long as they do not obstruct the flow of traffic.
Another solution which Orbos sees would be effective is to talk with establishments and ask them to discourage their customers from illegally parking near their shops.
“So ang nangyayari, dalawang lane ang sakop nila,” Orbos said.
Orbos is also encouraging mall owners to talk to private business establishments near their areas and allow their respective parking areas to be used by mall customers especially during weekends.
“Sabi namin sa kanila, bakit di kayo makiusap d’yan sa mga yan na ‘pag weekend walang laman ang mga parking space nila?” said Orbos.
Orbos said while other countries would not allow malls to be put up near major thoroughfares, authorities have to live with it and formulate the best possible solution to ease the traffic mess.
“Hindi mo naman pwedeng tanggalin ang mga malls,” added Orbos. (Rizal S. Obanil)
