CARMONA, Cavite – S.S.P. Chawrasia of India won his first title outside his home country after winning a three-man playoff for the $1-million Resorts World Manila Masters championship at the Manila Southwoods.
Chawrasia, 38, completed a two-putt birdie on the second playoff hole to beat American-Taiwanese Sam Chien and pocket $180,000.
Malaysia’s Nicholas Fung had earlier bowed out in the first extra hole.
Chawrasia has won four titles at home, including the Hero Indian Open last March.
“My friends and my family, they’re telling me to win one outside of India, so that’s my goal. So finally, I won this one,” Chawrasia said. “They’re very happy (family and friends), and I’m very happy. It’s a dream season for me, this is a very great year.”
Chawrasia fired a seven-under par 65 to join Chien (66) and Fung (63) at 19-under par 269.
The reachable par-5, 18th hole was used for the playoffs.
Jay Bayron sizzled with a 64 and caught up with Miguel Tabuena at 15-under. Both finished in a tie for 13th spot. Tabuena closed out with a 67.
Both Filipinos each earned $13,566 (roughly P638,000).
While Chawrasia had no problem hitting the green in two in the second playoff hole, Chien ran into trouble after finding the hazard on his tee shot.
After penalty, Chien found the rough and settled for bogey.
Earlier, Chien wedged to within four feet to salvage birdie and extend the playoffs. He settled for $110,000.
Tied at fourth at 270, were the Indian trio of Jyoti Randhawa, Shubhankar Sharma and Chiragh Kumar.
Sutijet Kooratanapisan of Thailand, the overnight leader, carded a 71 to end up in joint seventh at 271 with Michael Tran of Vietnam and Hung Chien-yao of Taipei.
