Gia Sagandoy racked up four titles while Marcus del Rosario annexed three crowns as the De La Salle-Zobel bets stamped their class in the Palawan Pawnshop-Palawan Express Pera Padala Manila Southwoods leg regional age-group 2016 at the Manila Southwoods Sports Club in Carmona, Cavite recently.
The unranked Sagandoy, 14, upended top seed Camille So, 6-3, 7-5, in the semis then trounced Mia So, 6-3, 6-3, to snare the girls’ 18-and-under crown. She also scored a 1-0 (ret.) win over No. 1 Gab Zoleta in the semis then whipped doubles partner Denise Bernardo, 6-0, 6-1, to run away with the 16-U plum.
She and Bernardo later beat Julai Ignacio and Patricia Uy, 8-4, for the 14-U doubles title with the duo also pulling off an 8-5 win over Megan Reyes and Lila Salvacio in the 18-U doubles finals of the top-ranking tournament.
Del Rosario, on the other hand, wore down Lourenco de Almeida in a thrilling three-setter, 7-6 (6), 1-6, 10-6, to capture the boys’ 18-U crown. He also crushed Matthew Garcia, 6-3, 6-2, in the 16-U finals of the weeklong event hosted by Southwoods for the first time, sanctioned by Philta and backed by Asiatraders Corp., exclusively distributor of Slazenger.
The DLS-Zobel mainstay later combined with Jose Angelo Aparte to subdue Leyton Portin and Eldyzar Alvarico, 8-3, for the 18-U doubles plum.
