The family of a stray bullet victim in Malabon is appealing to President Rodrigo Duterte to help them attain justice.
Emelyn V. Calano, 15, was hit in the head by a stray bullet while watching fireworks on Sacristia Street in Barangay San Agustin on December 31, minutes before New Year. She died on January 4 at the intensive care unit of Jose Reyes Medical Memorial Center (JRRMC).
Calano, a scholar at a private school in Malabon, was laid to rest at Our Lady of Lourdes Eternal Park in Barangay Tonsuya, Malabon, around 3 p.m. yesterday.
“Humihingi po kami ng tulong kay Pangulong Duterte para tulungan kami na makamit ang hustisya. Napakasakit para sa pamilya namin ang pagkamatay ng aming panganay,” Emil Calano, victim’s father, said.
Marilyn, the mother of Emelyn, said that President Duterte is their only hope, adding they are asking him to look into the case of her daughter.
Hundreds of people clad in black t-shirts with printed message “Justice for Emelyn!” joined the funeral march at about 1 p.m.
Senior Supt. John Chua, Malabon Police chief, said that they are doing everything to arrest the suspect who fired the bullet that hit Emelyn.
Police identified the suspect as Robert “Toti” Sy Jr., a neighbor of the victim. Reports said that he’s a known hitman and a drug suspect in Malabon. (Jel Santos)
