University of the Philippines (UP) tries to get back on track after absorbing its first loss over the weekend when it battles a dangerous Far Eastern University (FEU) today in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
Match is at 2 p.m. with the Lady Maroons hoping to erase the stigma of their 25-14, 25-19, 25-21 defeat against powerhouse Ateneo Lady Eagles that slipped them at solo second with a 4-1 win-loss card.
UP appeared invincible prior to that loss, with their cohesion and aggressive plays evident in each triumph. But the Katipunan-based squad lost its steam against a team with a wide championship experience, causing them to falter particularly in its defense.
UP Coach Jerry Yee expects his stalwarts to up their game this time, with FEU coming off back-to-back wins against University of the East and National University for a 3-2 card in the middle standings.
Last year’s Rookie of the Year awardee Isa Molde, Diana Carlos, and Nicole Tiamzon are slated to carry the fight for UP at the frontline with their smart and powerful attacks, along with setter Arielle Estranero and Kathy Bersola.
FEU, meanwhile, is set to carry the momentum of its latest 25-20, 25-13, 22-25, 25-20 win over NU four days back to forge a two-way tie for second with UP.
The Lady Tams have their own trio in Toni Rose Basas, Bernadeth Pons, and Jerrili Malabanan to match up UP’s triumvirate after conspiring for 48 points the last time.
Also seeking to bounce back from a loss is NU, which clashes with University of Santo Tomas (UST) at 2 p.m.
The Lady Bulldogs are on a two-game skid after scoring three straight wins for 3-2, while the Tigresses are near the cellar despite two straight victories in five outings.
