CANLUBANG, LAGUNA – Angelo Que struggled to stay within the leaders as he submitted a six-over par 78 in the second round of the Solaire Philippine Open yesterday at The Country Club (TCC) here.
Que, who is fresh from a win in Anvaya and is considered one of the favorites to capture this 99th edition of the tournament, started two shots off the leader at the end of first round.
He started well at the back nine when he birdied the 14 to make it three-under for the tournament.
However, things began to turn ugly for the 38-year-old Que.
After he bogeyed on 16, Que made a quadruple bogey on par three 17 – hitting the water twice before finally making it on the green on his third tee shot. He ended that disappointing hole with a two-putt.
Que made two bogeys on the first three holes of the front nine, then converted birdies on 4 and 5, but had a triple bogey on 6, which is another par three when he overshoot his tee shot.
With his ball playable despite landing on the threes behind the green, it took the mild-mannered Que three attempts to get his shot on the green, and then made two putts to end the hole.
Que, who opened with a 70 in this $400,000 event backed by Solaire Resort and Casino and supported by Meralco and PLDT, finished his round with a birdie on 8 and a bogey on 9.
With a two-day score of 148, he is currently tied at four-over with Thailand’s Arnond Vongvanij and Sutijet Kooratanapisan in this tournament organized by the Philippine Golf Tour (PGT).
American Johannes Veerman, so far, had the best score in the second round highlighted by eagles on 8 and 10 as he submitted a 69 after a first round 74 to jump in the running at 143.
