Treat Huey and Belarusian Max Mirnyi started their BNP Paribas Open doubles campaign on a high note after stunning three-time grand slam singles champion Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland and Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, 6-4, 3-6, 10-3, over the weekend in Indian Wells, United States.
Wawrinka is ranked No. 3 in the world, losing in five sets to compatriot Roger Federer in the Australian Open semis.
Dimitrov is rated No. 8.
Huey and Mirnyi outplayed their rivals in the third set to complete the improbable win against two strong singles players.
The win arranged a second-round meeting with grand slam champions and fourth seed Jamie Murray of Great Britain and Bruno Soares of Brazil.
The fancied duo survived multiple Grand Slam doubles champion Daniel Nestor of Canada and 2014 French Open doubles winner Edouard Roger-Vasselin, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 10-3.
Murray and Soares enjoyed big success last year after winning both the Australian Open and US Open.
Huey and Mirnyi, on the other hand, have yet to win a major title although they reached the final of the Delray Beach Open in Florida last February.
The BNP Paribas Open is said to be one of the most competitive doubles tournament in the ATP circuit.
The 39-year-old Mirnyi, a former world No. 1 doubles player, has won 16 doubles titles in his career but he still seeks a crown in the BNP Paribas Open.
Huey, for his part, hopes to eclipse his runner-up finish with a different partner four years ago.
