The 22-year-old man who jumped off the platform of the Metro Rail Transit 3 in Makati City Tuesday afternoon was suffering from depression, a Makati police investigator said.
SPO2 Sulpicio Monterde of the Makati traffic bureau said Richard Serdan, 22, of Barangay San Lorenzo, Makati, was alone when he boarded the MRT at the Magallanes Station, the nearest MRT station from his residence.
“Minutes before getting on the train, witnesses saw Serdan roaming around the station looking quite depressed,” said Monterde.
Serdan alighted after three stations in Guadalupe. While at the station, Serdan acted differently and was seen in deep thought.
Moments later, Serdan jumped off the platform onto an incoming train traveling at 40 kilometers per hours, shocking many passengers waiting to get a ride.
Monterde said family members refused to give any statements to the police while crying over the fate of their loved one. Police, based from persons who know Serdan, said he had personal issues and was troubled these past few days.
Monterde said Serdan only incurred bruises on both legs and feet after his body got stuck under the train at 1:50 p.m. He was taken to the Victor R. Potentiano Medical Center in Mandaluyong City after medical personnel rescued him under the train.
He was later transferred by family members to the Makati Medical Center. The incident prompted the MRT to suspend operations from its North Ave. station in Quezon City to Shaw Boulevard station in Mandaluyong and vice versa.
Operation went back to normal before 3 p.m. (Anna Liza V. Alavaren)
