The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) filed yesterday tax evasion charges against four business executives for allegedly ignoring tax notices sent to them to settle tax debts totaling to more than P131 million.
In separate criminal complaints filed before the Department of Justice, BIR Commissioner Caesar R. Dulay identified the accused as Efren Belen Melosantos, proprietor of Hans Christian Marketing and Hans Jefferson Marketing of Cabanatuan City, and Roderick Salem, Elvie Kang and Yoo Beongsun, corporate officers of Hyheavy Industrial Inc., of Olongapo City.
Tax probers were able to piece together the alleged tax evasion scheme of Hyheavy when it audited the financial statements of another taxpayer Bumgin Philippines Construction which made several purchases with the former amounting to P17 million in 2012.
Hyheavy did not report the sales to the BIR or file any return for the said year.
“As consequence of its acts and omissions, Hyheavy, together with its responsible officers, was assessed an estimated aggregate tax liability for 2012 amounting to P99.8 million, inclusive of interest and surcharges,” the BIR press statement said.
The case against Melosantos arose from non-payment of R32 million deficiency tax for 2011 despite repeated demand. (Jun Ramirez)
