The Hong Kong Eastern Long Lions leaned on the heroics of Marcus Elliott and held off the Singapore Slingers with an 82-80 double overtime victory Sunday to capture the ASEAN Basketball League crown at the OCBC Arena in Singapore.
Elliott, who before the game was named the World MVP, had 26 points and eight assists to power the Long Lions to a 3-1 series victory over the Slingers and the championship in their first season in the regional league. He was later adjudged as the Finals MVP.
His three-point play with 3:00 minutes left in the second extra period put Hong Kong up for good at 80-78 before Thai-American Tyler Lamb, the ASEAN Heritage MVP, scored to extend the lead to four.
A jumper by Leon Kwek gave the Slingers a ray of hope but the home side missed their final three shots that gave Hong Kong the victory.
Former San Miguel import Josh Boone added 13 points and 16 rebounds and local Shing Yee Fong added nine points and 11 rebounds for Hong Kong.
