Kim Fajardo, Jaja Santiago, and Rachel Anne Daquis will spearhead the all-Filipino Rebisco-PSL Manila team that will see action in the 2017 Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship in Kazakhstan late this month.
Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas Inc. officials headed by President Joey Romasanta and Vice President Peter Cayco announced the talent-laden lineup yesterday for the prestigious annual club tournament slated May 25 to 31.
Joining the trio are Denden Lazaro, Bia General, Aby Maraño, Ma. Lourdes Clemente, Maika Ortiz, Mika Reyes, Gen Casugod, Ces Molina, Aiza Pontillas, Jovelyn Gonzaga, and Rhea Dimaculangan.
While all 14 players were selected from various club teams in the Philippine Superliga, Cayco said 97 percent of the lineup will be part of the national team that competing in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games in Malaysia this August.
The Asian club event, in fact, will serve as a training ground for SEAG-bound athletes.
“Our target is to play at our highest level. It is important to drive on a target and peak at the right time in time for the SEA Games,” said Cayco in the PSA Forum yesterday at the Golden Phoenix Hotel.
Francis Vicente, who is also the SEAG-bound PH team’s mentor, will be handling the squad along with assistants Brian Esquibel, Ronald Dulay, and Emmanuel Calipes.
Hopes, however, are high for the squad as they are bracketed in a tough group composed of club teams from Japan, China, and Vietnam.
The other group has host Kazakhstan, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, and Iran.
“Palaban naman yung team natin. Madaling mag-jell inside the court. They are competitive and intelligent. It will just be a matter of how they’ll play their game in this kind of high-level competition,” said Vicente.
In last year’s edition, 12 clubs participated with Japan ruling the tournament held in Laguna. The Filipino spikers, represented by Foton Pilipinas, wound up seventh.
