GENERAL SANTOS CITY (PNA) – Two children were killed while around 270 families were displaced as flashfloods hit anew parts of Sarangani Province in the last three days.
Rene Punzalan, head of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), said Tuesday several rivers and tributaries in the province swelled and triggered heavy flooding as a result of sporadic heavy rains since Saturday.
He said the floods specifically affected low-lying and riverside communities in the municipalities of Glan, Malungon, Malapatan, and Alabel.
Citing a belated report from the Glan Municipal DRRM Office, he said two children were killed after being swept by rampaging floodwaters while crossing a river in Barangay Congan late Saturday afternoon.
The victims were identified as Ronelyn, 11, and Analyn Ninando, 12, who were listed as residents of Barangay Datal Bukay in Glan.
Rescuers recovered the bodies of the victims in a nearby village on Sunday morning, the report said.
In Alabel town, Punzalan said some 267 households were displaced by flashfloods that hit portions of Barangays Baluntay and Maribulan on Sunday.
